How to Calculate Fence Materials

A fence estimate starts with the total length of the fence line. From that length, you can determine the number of panels or sections, the number of posts, and—when using a picket fence—the number of individual pickets. Gates, corners and changes in direction can affect the final quantity.

How to Use the Fence Calculator

  1. Choose Panel Fence, Picket Fence, or Chain-Link Fence.
  2. Enter the total fence length and select the unit.
  3. Enter the fence height and the width of each panel or section.
  4. For pickets, enter the picket width and the gap between pickets.
  5. Add the number and average width of gates.
  6. Set post spacing and a waste allowance.
  7. Optionally enter material prices for a rough cost estimate.

Fence Panel Formula

Sections = Net Fence Length ÷ Section Width

The calculator rounds the required number of sections up to a whole section. It also accounts for the gate opening before estimating the fence sections.

Fence Post Formula

Posts ≈ Fence Length ÷ Post Spacing + 1

This is a planning estimate. Actual post counts can be higher because every corner, end, gate and change in direction may require a dedicated post.

Picket Fence Formula

Pickets = Net Fence Length ÷ (Picket Width + Gap)

Because picket width and spacing are entered in inches, the calculator converts them to feet before calculating the quantity. The result is rounded up and increased by your selected waste allowance.

How Much Concrete Do Fence Posts Need?

Post-hole concrete depends on hole diameter, depth, soil conditions, frost requirements and the size of the post. This calculator uses a simple cubic-feet-per-post input for planning. For a real installation, follow the fence manufacturer's instructions and local requirements.

Why Add Extra Fence Materials?

Extra material can cover damaged pieces, cuts, small measurement errors and future repairs. A straight fence with standard panels may need less allowance than a project with multiple corners, slopes, gates or custom cuts.

Important Installation Note

This calculator is intended for estimating materials. It is not a structural design tool. Fence height, footing size, wind exposure, soil conditions, property boundaries and local rules can affect the correct installation method.
